One of the biggest mistakes in conventional care is isolating systems. Gut symptoms are treated as gut problems. Liver findings are treated as liver problems. Hormones are treated as hormone problems.
But physiology doesn’t work in silos. Everything connects. Recently, a patient came in exhausted, frustrated, and uncomfortable.
She was experiencing:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Post-meal discomfort

Her basic blood work revealed signs of fatty liver — something that is often minimized or brushed aside with, “Just improve your diet.”
But fatty liver is rarely random. And diarrhea is rarely random. So we went deeper.
The Gut Test That Changed the Direction
When we ran a comprehensive stool analysis, three key findings stood out:
- Elevated beta-glucuronidase
- Dysbiosis
- Microbiome imbalance
Of all the markers, beta-glucuronidase was the red flag.
Let’s talk about why.
What Is Beta-Glucuronidase — and Why It Matters
Beta-glucuronidase is an enzyme produced by certain gut bacteria. When functioning appropriately, it plays a normal role in metabolism.
But when elevated, it can undo one of the liver’s most important jobs:
Phase 2 detoxification.
Here’s how this works.
Your liver processes hormones — including estrogen — in two major phases:
Phase 1
Transforms toxins and hormones into intermediate metabolites.
Phase 2
Packages them so they can be safely eliminated through bile and stool.
When beta-glucuronidase is elevated, it can deconjugate (unpackage) estrogen that the liver already processed.
Instead of leaving the body…Estrogen gets reabsorbed. This is called estrogen recirculation. And over time, this contributes to:
- Estrogen dominance
- Fibroids
- PMS
- Heavy or painful cycles
- Weight gain (especially hips/thighs)
- Breast tenderness
- Mood changes
- Fatigue
In this patient’s case, her gut wasn’t eliminating estrogen efficiently. It was recycling it.
The Liver-Gut-Hormone Connection
Now layer this on top of her blood work showing fatty liver. Fatty liver suggests impaired metabolic and detox capacity. When the liver is sluggish:
- Phase 1 may overproduce reactive intermediates
- Phase 2 may not keep up
- Hormones may not clear properly
- Oxidative stress increases
Add elevated beta-glucuronidase to that equation…And you have the perfect storm for estrogen overload. Her diarrhea wasn’t just digestive irritation. It was a sign that the microbiome was imbalanced and detox pathways were compromised.
Why Her Career History Raised Another Concern
She was a flight attendant for several years. High-altitude professions are associated with increased exposure to cosmic radiation. Chronic radiation exposure contributes to:
- Increased oxidative stress
- Potential DNA damage
- Greater detox demand
- Higher estrogen metabolite stress
If estrogen is already recirculating due to high beta-glucuronidase…
And oxidative stress is elevated…
